Course Description:

Despite best intentions during sedative procedures, the potential exists for life-threatening or even catastrophic patient outcomes. Poor patient selection, inadequate pretreatment assessment, inappropriate or delayed rescue efforts, and operator error are the most common causes of adverse outcomes. Actual cases of morbidity and mortality will be presented and discussed with the intent to identify and assess the reasons behind these unfortunate events, and to help prevent recurrence.

Learning Objectives:

  • Evaluate and assess adverse outcome scenarios.
  • Identify reasons for failed sedation regimens.
  • Discuss alternative management strategies.
  • Identify appropriate rescue procedures.

About the Speaker: Dr. Giovannitti is a dentist anesthesiologist and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Dental Anesthesiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. He previously was the Chair of the Department and the Anesthesia Director of the School’s Center for Patients with Special Needs.  He is the recipient of the Leonard M. Monheim Distinguished Service Award from the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists for outstanding contributions to the discipline of anesthesiology benefiting the dental profession, and the Jay A. Heidbrink Award from the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, awarded to the individual who has most significantly contributed to the advancement of anesthesiology in dentistry. He has been actively involved in teaching at all levels of dental education, has authored numerous scientific articles, book chapters, and a textbook pertaining to pain and anxiety control in dentistry, has lectured at professional seminars nationally and internationally, and is active in national dental anesthesiology professional organizations.
